Comenius Project

'We are all citizens of one world'

The Comenius Programme is named after Jan Amos Comenius (1592-1670), often considered the father of modern education.

Comenius is aimed at schools, colleges and local authorities across Europe.

Comenius has two main objectives:

  • to develop knowledge and understanding among young people and education staff of the diversity of European cultures and languages, and the value of this diversity;
  • to help young people to acquire basic life skills and competences for their personal development, for future employment and for active European citizenship.

You can read more about the Comenius Project on the British Council's website (external link).

We have been granted funding for the next two years from the British Council, to enable us to develop links with other schools in Europe.

We have linked up with a school in Sweden and in Italy.

International School Award

The title of our Project is Read2Succeed

We want to encourage children to enjoy reading for pleasure. We will send out questionnaires to all children and parents in school to seek their thoughts about reading. The project will involve all Governors, parents, staff and children across the school.

Some of the activities will involve:

  • Designing a joint logo involving a symbol that will include a reading sign and all the flags from all countries involved.
  • Children will learn basic words in another language.
  • Children will read a traditional tale and share their thoughts with their friends from other countries.
  • Children will take part in competitions about reading.
  • Children will create a piece of art about their favourite book/character.
  • Children will take part in World Book Day in March 2013.
  • Children will be able to Skype their friends in another country.
  • Children will share Christmas Traditions and Christmas Cards.
  • Children will hold an exhibition for parents and the wider community to share their Project Work.
